Native Groundcover Carpets: Easy,
Instant, and Gratifying!

Now Available for Preorder

Lowbush blueberry is one of many native species that can be easily installed, established, and enjoyed through groundcover carpets.

Our carpets of field-grown, native groundcovers are an excellent option for establishing beneficial plants quickly and successfully, and serve as an a sustainable alternative to traditional lawns. There’s no need for sowing or transplanting individual plants—these groundcovers have already grown abundant stems and root systems, allowing for immediate lush, extensive, and uniform carpets of native groundcovers and instant gratification. The native species offered also help retain soil moisture, prevent erosion, and offer food and habitat for local biodiversity—all while preserving expansive landscape views.

These native groundcover carpets are naturally grown and harvested in Maine. The plants offered are all wild types, adapted to regional conditions and low-maintenance once established. Simply clear the area of interest of weeds and debris, lay the carpet pieces next to each other, and water thoroughly. Thanks to these groundcovers’ pre-existing dense growth, they have an immediate aesthetic and functional effect, adding color and texture to the landscape while controlling invasives and other weeds.

Those interested can purchase native groundcover carpets through NATIVE. While we will have some inventory available throughout the season, placing orders in advance ensures you will have the correct quantity and the highest quality. We are currently taking pre-season orders.

Species Highlights

Lowbush Blueberry
(Vaccinium angustifolium)

This species produces tasty edible berries for you and wildlife to snack on, and displays delicate flowers that support a number of native pollinators. Its foliage transforms into a spectacular autumnal display as well.

Lowbush blueberry prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils, and plenty of sunlight. Grows between 6-24″ tall.

New York Fern
(Thelypteris noveboracensis)

This fern variety is a great option for areas of light shade and moist soils, and is quick to establish and spread. With its yellow-green, delicate foliage, New York fern is an attractive species—it is especially loved by toads, who use the plant often for shelter.

This species tolerates acidic and wet soils well. Grows between 12-18″ tall.

Hayscented Fern
(Dennstaedtia)

Hayscented fern’s feather-like foliage adds a softness and elegance to any landscape. When crushed, their leaves produce a comforting scent similar to fresh hay. As fall approaches, this fern’s color transitions from green, to gold, and finally to amber. This species prefers moist soil and light shade, but is quick to establish and forgiving of tough conditions.

Grows to about 15″ tall.

Wintergreen
(Gaultheria procumbens)

Wintergreen is a tiny plant that grows close to the ground, yet is prolific and hardy enough to form a dense carpet year round, even in winter. It produces flowers similar to those of blueberries, as well as bright red berries loved by birds.

Prefers light shade and acidic soils, and grows well in either dry or moist areas. Grows to 1-2″ tall.
